Review from the 'Danish News Paper Berlingske Tidende' :
SURPRISINGLY NEW and DELIGHTFUL - 5 out of 6 STARS
The singer Karin Juhl may be considered to be a late starter as she was on the plus side
of her 40's when she released her - incidentally excellent - debut album in 2010.
Now she appears with her husband, the Canadian guitarist Daniel Van Kranendonk,
in the duo 'Jazz By Heart' .
This results in jazz of an intimate character, which is neither fragile nor limited.
It is music that you cannot ignore and which primarily deals with relatively well-known works
which are being interpreted in a new and surprisingly - but never over intellectualized - form.
The CD starts out with a nearly ten minute version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's " My Favourite Things ",
and with Karin Juhl's strong personal voice they present an exciting journey that continues with songs like
Joni Mitchell's " All I Want ", Henry Manicini " Two For The Road ", Jimi Hendrix " Wind Cries Mary ",
and Pee Wee King's " Tennessee Waltz ".
All songs are renewed in a special, and very musical way. Here and there the duo is complemented with
the tasteful and stimulating tones of saxophonist Karin Hedelykke and trumpetist Markus Breuss.
OVERRASKENDE FORNYELSER - 5 out of 6 STARS
Også sangerinden Karin Juhl kan betegnes som en sen starter, idet hun var på plussiden af de 40,
da hun i 2010 udsendte sit – i øvrigt fornemme – debutalbum.
Nu optræder hun sammen med sin mand, den canadiske guitarist Daniel Van Kranendonk,
i duoen Jazz By Heart.
Joni Mitchells " All I Want ", Henry Mancini " Two For The Road ", Jimi Hendrix’ " Wind Cries Mary "
Review from the 'Danish JazzNyt' :
Just over three years ago I reviewed the singer Karin Juhl's CD recording debut here on the blog.
It was a fine debut with some cool sidemen. Now she has moved closer together with guitarist
Daniel van Kranendonk, who played on a single number on her debut album.
Under the name Jazz By Heart they play Jazz, Rock and Bossa Novas. Joni Mitchell's All I Want,
Hammerstein's My Favorite Things ( in an interesting arrangement with trumpet ),
Jobim's Corcovado and Hendrix's Little Wing are among the numbers.
Karin Juhl's voice is accompanied by Kranendonk's electric and acoustic guitars.
They have fine control of their instruments and never over do it.
Juhl's voice is close, intimate, intense, and restrained.
Kranendonk is not the typical jazz guitarist found within a vocal / guitar duo.
It helps to strengthen the duo.
It is of an exceptional sound quality, pleasant and comfortably original.
But not on a Sunday - morning - jazz - like way.
There is an underlying edge and rock nerve in Kranendonk 's guitar playing.
He cites guitarists like King Crimson's Robert Fripp and Mike Stern as role models.
Although we are not presented with intense rock bursts, there is a consistent rock feel in Kranendonk .
Karin Juhl never over exaggerates and has mastered the voice.
